Little Mistakes, Big Consequences Common Car Care

As a car owner, you know that regular maintenance is crucial for keeping your vehicle running smoothly. However, there are a few common mistakes that can lead to costly repairs.

Here are some tips to avoid these pitfalls:

Running Your Tank Low

Running your car on empty can damage the fuel pump. The pump relies on fuel for cooling, so running it dry can lead to premature failure.

Ignoring the Check Engine Light

That blinking check engine light isn't just a nuisance; it's a warning sign. Ignoring it can lead to more serious engine problems and costly repairs.

Neglecting Battery Maintenance

A weak battery can cause a range of issues, from difficulty starting your car to electrical system failures. Keep your battery topped off and replace it when necessary.

Unnecessary Transmission Flushes

Modern transmissions are designed to last the life of the vehicle. Unnecessary fluid flushes can introduce contaminants and damage internal components.

Using the Wrong Tire Size

Using tires that aren't the correct size can cause various issues, including poor handling, reduced fuel efficiency, and accelerated tire wear.

Kicking Ice and Snow

Kicking ice and snow off your car can damage the paint and plastic components. Use a soft brush or warm water to remove ice and snow safely.

By avoiding these common mistakes and following regular maintenance schedules, you can extend the life of your car and save money on repairs.

Grave Stone Cleaning Murder revealed!

Here is the video of the results of the cleaning

I recently cleaned up some of my relatives headstones at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, MO. While I was there and had my equipment that I usually clean cars with, I decided to clean a few of the older graves. I have never seen a headstone that said Murdered on it, so one of the most interesting was:

A.J. Aleshire

Aleshire, a night watchman, tragically lost his life in a dispute with Summer Holcomb. While Holcomb was acquitted of murder, this outcome was not uncommon during the Wild West era. In those days, heated arguments often escalated into deadly confrontations, and the legal system was less likely to convict a killer unless the act was premeditated.

Son of Isaac & Sarah Ann (Lakin) Aleshire. Husband of Eliza Catherine (Judd) Aleshire. Father of Victoria Charlott, Oscar, Frederick, Clora, Arthur and Abraham Jr. who was just two weeks old when his father was shot to death.

He was preceded in death by two infant children: Chlora and Arthur.

He was a night watchman for the city of Butler and shot during a robbery attempt by Sumner Holcomb. He died later at his home of his injuries.

From Oil Crisis to MPG Mayhem: The Untold Story of Your Car's Gas Mileage

Ever glance at those fuel economy stickers and wonder how those numbers magically appear? Buckle up, because the story behind car mileage is a wild ride filled with scientific ingenuity, hilarious testing hacks, and a dash of oil crisis history.

Born in the 70s, Fueled by Necessity

The whole "minimum mileage" thing started back in the roaring (and expensive) 1970s. Remember the oil crisis? Yeah, that one. With gas prices skyrocketing and supplies dwindling, leaders in the US knew they had to act. Enter the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards of 1975. The goal? Cars rolling off the assembly line had to be more efficient, saving both your wallet and the nation's fuel reserves.

These standards have evolved over time, with car manufacturers needing to hit specific mpg targets across their entire fleet. This push for efficiency led to some, shall we say, creative approaches to mileage testing.

Lab Mazes vs. Real-World Mayhem

Car companies put their vehicles through a series of tests to determine their mileage, aiming to mimic real-world driving. But here's the kicker: these lab tests don't always translate to the road. In fact, the numbers are often adjusted down by 10-20% to account for unpredictable things like traffic jams, potholes, or even a rogue hamster taking a joyride under the hood (yes, that really happened!).

The Funniest Fails of Mileage Testing

Now, let's get to the good stuff: the hilarious (and sometimes embarrassing) ways manufacturers once tried to boost mileage numbers.

  • The Duct Tape Debacle: Back in the day, some companies covered body seams with tape during testing to improve aerodynamics. Great for the test, not so great for everyday driving (unless you like the duct tape look). Needless to say, this trick was quickly banned.

  • The "Featherfoot" Flyers: Meet the test drivers known for barely touching the gas pedal, striving for the ultimate in fuel efficiency. These drivers would accelerate so slowly, they'd likely get honked at on a real road. While effective for testing, it's not exactly practical for the average driver with places to be.

  • The Weight-Loss Warriors: Desperate for top mileage numbers, some manufacturers stripped test cars bare. Spare tire? Gone. Radio? Nope. Air conditioning? Forget about it! These lightweight shells were basically empty husks, leading testers to quip, "Sure, it gets 40 mpg, but good luck surviving a Kansas summer without AC!"

  • The "Perfect Hill" Myth: Early mileage tests were basically downhill races in disguise. Jokes about finding the perfect slope for optimal fuel economy were rampant. Thankfully, today's tests are stricter, but the quest for mileage-boosting hacks never truly dies.

  • The Pizza Delivery Fiasco: One legendary tester attempted to prove real-world mileage with a pizza delivery run. Big mistake. The pizza arrived late, the mileage was terrible, and it highlighted the vast difference between perfectly controlled lab environments and the chaotic reality of driving.

Mileage Matters: The Modern Approach

The numbers you see on a car's window sticker are a mix of city (55%) and highway (45%) driving, all tested under the same strict EPA guidelines. Real-world driving with traffic, weather, and your own driving habits will always affect mileage, but these numbers give you a much clearer picture.

The EPA Gets an Upgrade (2008 and Beyond)

In 2008, the EPA realized their old testing methods weren't cutting it. They updated the rules, making the tests more realistic by considering factors like:

  • Faster Speeds & Aggressive Driving: Simulating higher speeds and quicker acceleration to reflect real-world highway driving and traffic situations.

  • Winter Woes: Cold weather impacts gas mileage, especially in gas-powered cars. The updated tests factor this in, giving you more accurate numbers for winter driving.

  • AC Crusaders: Running the AC can guzzle gas, so it's now included in the EPA tests, reflecting what happens on a hot summer day.

  • Stop-and-Go Blues: Stop-and-go traffic and short trips are now part of the testing protocol, better reflecting typical city driving.

Fuel Efficiency Freedom Awaits!

Thanks to these updates, the fuel economy ratings on new cars are more accurate than ever. While real-world results might vary slightly, these numbers are a solid starting point.

Guide to finding a trustworthy car dealer

This is a well-written and informative guide on how to choose a trustworthy used car dealer in Butler, MO. It provides valuable tips and insights that can help consumers make informed decisions.

Here are a few additional points to consider:

Research the specific dealership:

  • Look for reviews and testimonials from customers who have purchased cars from the dealership.

  • Check if the dealership has any complaints filed against them with the Better Business Bureau.

  • Look for any awards or recognitions the dealership has received.

Ask questions:

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions about the car's history, maintenance records, and any potential issues.

  • Ask if they charge a dealer fee or administration fee. If they do it is just to pad their profits, it is NOT required by law.

  • Ask if you can take the car to your own trusted mechanic to do a pre purchase inspection. A reputable dealer will always let you do this.

  • Ask about additonal fees, they add up. Do they charge for a temporary tag? They do not have to charge for this, it is only adding to their bottom line.

Trust your gut:

  • If you feel pressured or uncomfortable, walk away.

  • A good dealership will be patient and willing to answer all of your questions.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of finding a trustworthy used car dealer and avoiding scams.

Should I get a 4wd or 2wd pickup how to choose

While 4WD trucks often steal the spotlight, 2WD pickups offer distinct advantages that shouldn't be overlooked. Let's break down the pros and cons of each:

2-Wheel Drive Pickups: The Underdogs

Pros:

  • Superior Towing Capacity: 2WD trucks often have higher towing capacities due to their lower curb weight.

  • Improved Fuel Economy: Fewer drivetrain components mean better fuel efficiency.

  • Lower Maintenance Costs: Simpler mechanical systems reduce maintenance needs and costs.

  • Lower Purchase Price: 2WD models are typically more affordable than their 4WD counterparts.

Cons:

  • Limited Off-Road Capability: 2WD trucks are not designed for serious off-roading.

  • Reduced Traction in Adverse Conditions: In snow, mud, or other slippery surfaces, 2WD can struggle.

4-Wheel Drive Pickups: The All-Terrain Champions

Pros:

  • Off-Road Capability: 4WD trucks excel in challenging terrain, making them ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Improved Traction: Enhanced grip on slippery surfaces, especially in winter weather.

  • Hill Climbing Ability: 4WD provides added traction for climbing steep inclines.

Cons:

  • Lower Towing Capacity: Increased weight can limit towing capacity compared to 2WD models.

  • Reduced Fuel Economy: More complex drivetrain components can negatively impact fuel efficiency.

  • Higher Purchase Price: 4WD systems add to the overall cost of the vehicle.

  • Increased Maintenance Costs: Additional components require more maintenance and potential repairs.

The Bottom Line:

The best choice between a 2WD and 4WD pickup depends on your specific needs and driving habits. If you primarily drive on paved roads and occasionally need light towing capabilities, a 2WD truck is a great option. However, if you frequently encounter off-road conditions or live in areas with severe winter weather, a 4WD truck is the better choice.

Consider these factors when making your decision:

  • Driving Conditions: Assess the types of roads you'll be driving on regularly.

  • Towing Needs: Determine the weight you'll be towing.

  • Budget: Factor in the higher purchase price and maintenance costs of 4WD models.

  • Lifestyle: Consider your outdoor activities and hobbies.

By carefully evaluating your needs, you can select the right pickup truck to meet your specific requirements.

How to find a good car dealership in Butler MO

In the market for a used car in Butler, MO?  Here is what you need to ask the first thing when you start talking to a car dealer, even before you look at the cars they have available.

1)  Does the dealer charge a fee?  Missouri state law ALLOWS, not requires dealers to charge an administrative fee.  This fee varies from $0 to $500 for each car.  Some dealers may try to tell you that every licensed dealer is required by law to charge this fee, that is simply not true.  If a dealer tries to tell you that just leave and go to a trustworthy dealer that does not charge an administrative fee to pad their profits.

2)  Is the title ready to be handed to you the day that you buy the car?  Why does this matter, if a dealer says they will mail the title so no problem right?  There can be all kinds of unforeseen circumstances that will delay a title and is beyond that car dealers control.  The bottom line is if a dealer doesn't have the title in hand that day, just walk away and find another dealer.  There are many news stories, both national and local, about dealers selling cars and not being able to produce the title after purchase, not worth the risk.

3)  Are there any additional fees?  Many dealers will add on even more fees, for example a fee for the temporary registration tag.  Ask for the final out the door price of a car before you start the purchase.  If it is not exactly the price you agreed on, down to the cent, just walk away.

The only car dealership in Butler, MO, new or used, that can guarantee you all three of these items:

A)  No dealer fee ever.

B) Has the clean and clear title in hand the day you purchase.

C)  Does not charge any additional fee, not even for temp tags.  The price you see is EXACTLY what you pay out the door.
